Restoring your Kennel Connection 7 database
There may be times when you have to restore your database to
a new computer.
Important: When you restore a database, it
will overwrite any data that is currently there. If you are not sure
whether you have or want to save any data on the computer, you MUST backup
the database before restoring the new one. If you do not, all data in the
existing database will be lost and there will be no way to retrieve it.
Software Connection LLC is not responsible for users overwriting existing
data or any lost data.
First, you will need to backup the database from the
existing computer onto an external hard drive, such as a flash drive.
Click on Backing up Kennel Connection 7 for instructions.
Please note: All of the Kennel Connection
software must be closed on all computers when backing up and restoring the
database. This includes Kennel Connection, Time Clock, and BCSLive
applications. KC7 is a SQL database and SQL databases can only be backed
up from the main/server computer.
Take the external drive with your backup to the new computer
and plug it in. Launch the Backup/Restore Utility.
Windows 7 users: If the Backup/Restore
shortcut is not on your desktop, click on Start, All Programs, Kennel
Connection 7, Backup/Restore utility.
Windows 8/10 users: If the Backup/Restore
utility is not on your desktop, it can be found in your "Start menu"
under Kennel Connection 7. If you cannot find it there, click the Windows
key + S on your keyboard to bring up Windows search. Type in
"backup" without the quotations and choose the Kennel Connection 7
Backup/Restore utility.
Click on "Restore the database" tab and choose the
browse or "..." button.
Navigate to where the backup is and double click on it.
Backups will be called KC7SQLDate.bak or KC7SQL02192017.bak for example.
Please note: For KC7, the only file that can be
restored is a .bak file. If you ONLY store compressed zip files, you will
need to right click on it and extract it prior to restoring it otherwise the
backup utility will not even be able to see the file when you browse.
Once you have selected the file, it will show in the Source
field. Click on "Restore the database" button at the bottom.
Note: The file showing in the Source field must
have an extension .bak to work.
You will receive a successful message once the restore is
complete. You can now open KC to check your data.
If you receive errors using this utility, this most likely
means there is a Windows or SQL Server permission issue. You will need to
use SQL Management Studio to restore. Click on Restoring .bak backup file through SQL Management Studio for
directions.
Pictures/Documents/Receipts:
If you attach pictures or documents in KC or have clients
sign the signature pad, these are stored in the Pix, KCDocs and Receipts
folders in the KC7 folder on the main computer/server. If moving KC to a
new computer, you will need to copy these folders onto your flash drive and
save them to the KC7 folder on the new main machine, choosing to replace the
existing folders which are blank on a new install.
