Setting Live Access service to auto-restart if it fails

Setting Live Access to auto-restart if it fails

The ability to connect your data to the web for Kennel Connection Live Access depends on a service that runs on the computer you set Live Access up on. This is a service that is installed and controlled by your Windows operating system. This means that when you boot your computer, restart your computer or leave your computer running, it's up to Windows to start this service when the machine boots up and/or keep this service running properly while your machine is running. Unfortunately due to many variables, there may be times where Windows does not start the service or fails to keep it running due to a variety of things.

If you continually have this issue and constantly have to go into Kennel Connection, Utilities, Live Access and restart the service, you will want to edit the settings of your service to allow it to auto-restart after failure. Please see below.

On your computer that you setup Live Access on, press the Windows key + S to open search. Type in "services.msc" without the quotes. Choose "Services" from the search results.

Once in services, press the letter "k" on your keyboard to jump to the K section. Look for the service called KC Host.

Right mouse click and choose properties. Then click the "Recovery" tab.

In the first section, please set your options to match the ones shown here:

Now please put a check mark next to "Enable actions for stops with errors". Then click "Restart Computer Options"

Place a check mark next to "Before restart, send this message to computers on the network".

If you have workstations running Kennel Connection that are connected to the database on this machine, if this machine restarts, all workstations will temporarily lose connection. This message will display on the screens of all the workstations before it reboots. You can also change the time the machine waits to restart after the message is displayed if you prefer more than 1 minute of notice. You can edit the text of the message if you prefer to put something like "The host computer is about to reboot due to an error. Please save your work and close Kennel Connection. Once the host machine reboots, you may reconnect." Or any message you prefer. Below is the default message using the computer name which in this case is XPS. Click OK to save.

Click OK on the properties window to close and apply all your settings and that's it. Now these actions will be taken upon the service faulting:

  • First fault, Windows will restart the service only and you should be able to reconnect unless it fails to start.

  • Second fault, Windows will restart the service again and you should be able to reconnect unless it fails to start.

  • (Subsequent) Third fault, Windows will initiate a reboot of your computer but before rebooting, it will send a message to any computers on the network notifying them of the pending reboot.

IMPORTANT: There may be some cases where you would simply prefer not to interrupt the KC desktop connection to your workstations due to a faulting service for Live Access. If you do not wish for your computer to reboot upon Subsequent/third fault, you may set the third subsequent option to restart service like the first two options. This is up to you.

*You do not need to complete these settings for other related services.
